Winning at Mumming

Winning at Mumming

Picking up my daughter from daycare this afternoon I ran into an old friend I hadn’t seen for ages. It was so nice to see her and we had a great little chat and a nice little laugh together. Mid conversation she pointed out that Darcy (my 18month old who was on my hip) had a snotty nose and she laughed loudly. Darcy had just been having a tantrum (over something ridiculous of course) so I knew he was all blotchy and a bit snotty but I had wiped his face so I was sure he was all good. I just dismissed it. I didn’t even look.

I walked around with Darcy on my hip saying good-bye to the teachers and to all the lovely mums I had met there recently. It was peak hour at kindy. There were LOTS of mums there. One last big happy wave goodbye then the three of us walked out holding hands together. How together we must have looked. Well I thought so..

Until my daughter pointed out that Darcy had a “BIG GREEN SNOT” on his face. OK, when my girlfriend told me he had some snot, I really wished I had of looked. I really wished I hadn’t dismissed her loud laugh as something funny I must of said. It wasn’t just a bit of snot. This thing was like a massive fluro green witchetty grub was eating his face.

It made me think about all the mum fails I’ve had over the years and I had a good laugh to myself on the way home. I remembered when Tilly was just a few weeks old I was so sleep deprived I tried to put the pram in the boot of the car with her still in it. Don’t ask me how. Neighbours across the road looking and waving..

And when Darcy was about six months old he rolled out of the pram straight onto his face on the concrete pavement in the middle of Cronulla mall. We were outside a busy café, Tilly had escaped the pram and was running away, I was talking to an old work mate and Darcy was facedown on the pavement screaming (he was fine btw).

There are so many more but I’ll leave it there for now and hand it over to you..
